A city steeped in history and atmosphere.........

There is so much to see and do in York. Here are just a few of our favourite sites!

If you love history, visit

  • Clifford's Tower (Medieval Norman Castle with panoramic views of the city. A monument to York's turbulent past. )
  • Barley Hall (Make yourself at home in this picturesque medieval townhouse, lovingly restored to its original splendour.)
  • York Minster (A true masterpiece in stained glass and stone dating back to the 7th century. Climb the 275 steps to the top of the Central Tower to get the best view of the city.)

If museums are your thing, try

  •  Yorkshire Museum (and gardens) (Learn about the city's journey from prehistory to Romans, Vikings and Medieval York. Walk on a genuine Roman mosaic floor and explore the Roman artefacts. We love walking through the beautiful gardens and along the river.)
  •  York Castle Museum  (This award-winning museum is one of our favouites. Experience 400 years of history in recreated streets, interactive galleries and even a prison!)

Children and adults alike will love

  •  National Railway Museum (A must for all lovers of train travel. Discover 200 years of railway history and see the legendary Mallard .)
  •  DIG (An archaeological adventure- grab a trowel and discover 2000 years of hidden history.)
  •  The York Dungeon (Live actors to bring you face to face with Vikings, saxons and even York's very own Guy Fawkes.)
  •  Yorvik Viking Centre (An absolute treat for all ages. Take in the sights, sounds and smells of Viking-age York during this hands-on experience.)
  •  York City Walls (The best way to appreciate fully the beauty of the city. 2 miles of historic walls which have protected the city for nearly 2000 years.)
