Dog friendly beaches on the Yorkshire coast

Marion Peel • Sep 10, 2022

Beautiful Yorkshire coastal villages for all the family, including dogs!

We love taking our dogs Patsy and Penny for a run-around on the beach and we are spoilt for choice as there are some fabulous dog-friendly beaches on the Yorkshire coast. Here are a few of our favourites.

East Yorkshire:-

Fraisthorpe (our closest - 45 minutes from The Cherries)

Our absolute no. 1 beach. We love bringing the dogs here early in the morning. So peaceful and spacious- popular with dog walkers, families, surfers and horse-riders!

  • Sandy beach stretching for miles.
  • Dog-friendly all year round.
  • Great refreshments at The Cow Shed.

North Landing, Flamborough

Not too big, not too small. Stunning chalk cliffs and a sandy/pebble beach popular with bathers, kayakers and fishermen.

  • Beautiful natural cove
  • Array of birds (puffins, kittiwakes, razorbills, cormorants)

Dane's Dyke, Flamborough

This is the beach for you if you appreciate crystal clear water and natural beauty.

  • Stunning white pebble and sandy beach
  • Lovely forest nearby
  • Rock pools to explore-great for kids!

North Yorkshire:-

Robin Hood's Bay

You can't help but love the beauty of the coast and the village. The journey over the gorse-covered Moors to reach this gorgeous area is a real treat. A great day out for all the family.

  • Craggy cliffs and an abundance of rock pools
  • Quaint streets full of picturesque white-washed old cottages
  • Lots of smuggler history!

Runswick Bay

An artist's delight. A fabulous beach below the cute village with its traditional cottages and narrow streets.

  • Quaint car-free former fishing village
  • Beach for fossil hunters!

Whitby (seasonal restrictions for dogs in areas of the beach)

There is something really special about Whitby. Not only has it got a lovely beach but also masses of history and culture. Great for all ages.

  • Huge sandy beach
  • Gothic culture (think Dracula!)
  • Cobbled streets, independent shops and eateries, museums (Captain Cook), pier

Cayton Bay

If you want a more traditional seaside resort, Scarborough will be right up your street. Cayton Bay is a lovely beach with  plenty of opportunities for water-sports enthusiasts.

  • Fine, sandy beach popular with surfers and windsurfers
  • Great for bird-watchers and fossil hunters
