The Cherries self-catering cottage near York has three bedrooms sleeping five people and offers guests of any generation the ideal rural retreat, whether you wish to explore Yorkshire’s many attractions, catch up with family and friends, or simply kick back in a comfortable and spacious cottage.
Costs for UK ‘staycations’ have spiralled and holidays to stunning destinations such as York and Whitby are now more expensive than ever before, especially if you like to spend your precious time out in memorable, high-quality accommodation – and be able to bring your pet dogs along too.
The good news is that it is still possible to enjoy a value-for-money self-catering, dog-friendly family break in this magnificent county! The Cherries cottage is located in the picturesque hamlet of High Catton that offers all the benefits you’d wish for from a rural location at the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds while being only a short drive away from the area’s major attractions, including York (Park and Ride is just a 10-minute drive),
The spectacular East Yorkshire coastline is only an hour away, where you can explore Whitby’s rich maritime history and iconic Abbey, and the wide sandy beaches of Scarborough, Bridlington and Fraisthorpe (which is also a dog-friendly beach).
Head east to experience the breathtaking scenery of the North York Moors national park, or go east into the rolling hills and quaint villages of the Yorkshire Wolds. The bustling market towns of Thirsk, Northallerton, Pickering, Malton, Pocklington, Market Weighton, Beverley and Driffield all have much to offer the visitor with independent shops, bars and cafes, and if stately homes are your thing, you’re spoilt for choice with a dazzling array of impressive homes and gardens within easy reach, including Castle Howard, Sledmere House, and Burton Agnes Hall.
If you’re looking for entertainment for your little ones beyond the traditional seaside attractions, there’s masses of fun on offer, including the Eden Camp, Dalby Forest, York Maze, Flamingo Land, Allerthorpe Lakeland Park, Jorvic Viking Centre, York Dungeon, Piglets Adventure Park, and so much more.
And lovers of the great outdoors won’t be disappointed – walkers can enjoy the Wolds Way, the Hudson Way, the Chalkland Way, the Minster Way and the Wilberforce Way, while cyclists can pedal along national cycling routes 66 and 65, or simply spin up and down the challenging Wolds hills to appreciate some of the area’s lovely views.
With a holiday at The Cherries, you certainly don’t have to venture far to make wonderful memories for every generation of the family.

Your Hosts Marion and Robert Peel have lived in High Catton with their daughters, Lucy and Katy, since the early 90's and bought The Cherries – which is adjacent to their own home and dates back to the 1920s – in 2018 in order to convert it into a holiday cottage.
Having stayed in many self-catering cottages in the UK and abroad, the couple have a keen understanding of what people want from their holiday accommodation and have fully refurbished The Cherries to a very high standard to create a ‘home from home’ experience for guests.
Marion teaches French and Spanish, while retired biology teacher Robert now loves to paint – you might spot his artwork adorning the walls of The Cherries! You may also catch sight of the couple’s pets (two friendly dogs Penny and Patsy), and they are on hand next-door should you have any questions, but will respect your privacy and simply leave you to relax and enjoy your holiday.
